The Greater Kensington String Band is a co-ed, non-profit organization based in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia, founded in 1946. We are a part of the annual Philadelphia Mummers Parade, a unique and historic event held on New Year’s Day in Philadelphia, featuring elaborate costumes, music, and vibrant performances. The Greater Kensington String Band’s mission is centered around preserving and promoting the rich tradition of Philadelphia’s Mummers Parade and providing the opportunity for members to learn and perform music, while striving for artistic excellence. The band aims to engage with the local community through performances and events all year long, fostering a sense of pride and connection among the public. We give back to the community through charitable initiatives/performances such as: Yearly participation in the Kelly’s Kidz Holiday Toy Drive and performance for St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, Monetary food drive for Philabundance each fall, Serving meals and providing performances for the families at the Ronald McDonald House annually in Philadelphia, Performing for local grade schools in our community such as Franklin Towne Elementary, along with other initiatives. We are dedicated to achieving high standards in musical and theatrical performances, ensuring that each show is a vibrant and memorable experience for audiences. The band often participates in educational musical activities and outreach programs to introduce new generations to the Mummers tradition. Overall, the Greater Kensington String Band works to ensure that the Mummers Parade continues to be a lively and integral part of Philadelphia’s cultural landscape while providing musical education and performance opportunities for all.
